Family To Sue Biden Admin For $100 Million
Over Death Of Woman Killed By Illegal Immigrant

(Just the News) — The killer reportedly had an MS-13 tattoo and authorities later confirmed his association with the illicit group. He was 16 at the time he crossed the border and told authorities he had paid a guide to smuggle him across so as to escape gang violence in El Salvador.

The family of Kayla Hamilton, a 20-year-old woman killed by an illegal immigrant, plans to sue the Biden administration for $100 million, partially blaming the administration's immigration enforcement policies for her wrongful death.

The illegal immigrant raped Hamilton and subsequently strangled her with a phone cord. Prior to the murder, he entered the U.S. unlawfully in March 2022, but secured release into the interior under the Biden administration's directives.

The family is seeking $100 million and plans to name the Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services as defendants, the Washington Times reported, citing Attorney Brian Claypool, who represents Hamilton's mother, Tammy Nobles.

Shell Suspends Shipping Through Red Sea,
Report Says

(Yahoo! Finance) — Oil giant Shell decided to suspend all its shipments through the Red Sea last week after ships passing through the area were repeatedly targeted by Houthi attacks, according to a report.

The Wall Street Journal said Shell declined to confirm that it would no longer be sending ships transporting fossil fuels past the west Yemini coast where missiles have been hitting the vital shipping route.

Sources told the paper that the decision was taken after the U.S. and UK launched counter attacks on Houthi targets in response to the group’s actions.

The Houthis have been at war with the Yemeni government since 2014 when the country’s civil war started.

The Iran-backed group initially won victories against the government, but a coalition led by Saudi Arabia later intervened and hit the group with air strikes.

Shigella: An Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Is Rising Among Philly's Homeless Population

(The Philadelphia Inquirer) — Shigella, an increasingly hard to treat bacterial infection, is on the rise in Philadelphia, especially among people who are experiencing homelessness or use opioids.

Eighty cases were reported to city health officials last year in October and November combined, according to an advisory issued last month by the Philadelphia Department of Health. They included 12 children who were infected.

In comparison, fewer than 10 cases were reported per month from January through September 2023.

Shigella is a germ that causes bloody diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. It passes from one person to another when small amounts of fecal matter are ingested, which can happen when people do not wash their hands after using the bathroom, during sex, and by drinking dirty water. People experiencing homelessness and without access to clean bathrooms are at higher risk of a shigella infection.

Biden Announces Fresh Wave Of Early Student
Debt Cancellation For Some Borrowers

(NBC News) — President Joe Biden announced Friday that federal student debt will be wiped out for certain borrowers who took out relatively small loans and have been in repayment for the past decade.

Borrowers who received less than $12,000 in federal loans and have been paying off their balances for at least 10 years "will get their remaining student debt cancelled immediately" in February, Biden said in a statement.

He said that the move comes "nearly six months ahead of schedule" and that it applies to borrowers enrolled in the new income-driven repayment plan known as SAVE, which administration officials touted in recent months as a way to help lower their monthly payments.

While 30 million people are eligible for the SAVE plan, Biden said Friday that 6.9 million are currently enrolled. It was not immediately clear how many borrowers would be affected by the cancellation effort.

Experts Confirm: Icelandic Faultline Has Awakened After 800 Years

(Agence France-Presse) — A volcanic eruption that has engulfed homes in an Icelandic fishing port confirms that a long-dormant faultline running under the country has woken up, threatening to belch out lava with little warning for years to come, an expert warned on Tuesday.
Icelandic Faultline
Glowing lava swallowed several homes on Sunday at the edge of the town of Grindavik, southwest of the capital Reykjavik.

The fishing town was mostly evacuated due to threat of an eruption last month and the most recent volcanic activity has since eased, authorities in the North Atlantic nation said on Monday.

The island straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack in the ocean floor separating the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

House Approves Resolution Condemning Biden
Border Policies With Democratic Support

(Just the News) — The vote came the same day that House Speaker Mike Johnson met with President Joe Biden and subsequently indicated that his position had not changed on the need for immediate border security measures.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution condemning President Joe Biden's handling of border security amid an unprecedented surge in illegal crossings.

The lower chamber approved the resolution in a 225-187 vote which included the support of 14 Democrats, The Hill reported. The move follows a congressional visit to border jurisdictions at the beginning of the year.

The vote came the same day that House Speaker Mike Johnson met with President Joe Biden and subsequently indicated that his position had not changed on the need for immediate border security measures. Johnson declared after the meeting that he had insisted on imposing "substantive policy change" to address the influx.

"We documented 64 instances where the president took executive action or his agencies took action to create the current catastrophe that we have at the border. It's a national security and humanitarian catastrophe, and I articulated that to the president in the meeting," Johnson told reporters.

Senators Call For Action Against ‘Pro-Hamas Vandals’
Who Defaced Veteran Cemetery

(The Center Square) — A coalition of Republican U.S. Senators called on Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday to go after the Hamas activists allegedly vandalizing veteran cemeteries.

Earlier this month, a group of pro-Palestinian protesters allegedly vandalized the Los Angeles National Cemetery, where nearly 90,000 veterans are buried, spray painting symbols and phrases, including “FREE GAZA” and “INTIFADA,” a word commonly associated with Palestinian actions against Israel.

“The defacement of the Los Angeles National Cemetery is disgusting, anti-American, and a testament as to how far pro-Hamas extremists will go to advocate on behalf of a Foreign Terrorist Organization,” reads the letter, led by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and signed by more than a dozen other Republican Senators.

Online video of the incident appears to show protesters spray painting with green paint at at the protest as others chant and hold Palestinian flags, “This is an American war on Palestine,” one protester shouts.

The letter blasts the "pro-Hamas vandals" and calls on the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute the alleged crime, saying it falls under federal purview.

Amorous Fish Blamed For
Mysterious Sound Around Florida Bay

(UPI) — A Florida scientist said a mysterious bass sound reported by residents in the Tampa Bay area might be coming from mating fish.

Area residents reported hearing the low-pitched sound periodically since 2021, and so far no concrete answers have been found as to its origins.

James Locascio, a senior scientist with the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, said the sound could be coming from black drum fish in the bay. He said the fish produce throbbing sounds during their mating season when muscles vibrate against their swim bladders.

He said the sound could reach as far as a mile away from the water. "It's a low frequency sound, and so they travel much better and go further distances, and they go through dissimilar media more efficiently," Locascio told WTVT-TV.
